Vision vs. Medical Insurance

Vision Insurance

Vision plans (like VSP and EyeMed) are designed strictly for routine eye care and vision correction.

  • Checking for glasses prescriptions
  • Contact lens fittings
  • Allowances for frames and lenses
  • Routine annual eye screenings

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance is billed when the doctor is treating, evaluating, or monitoring a specific medical eye condition.

  • Eye infections or "pink eye"
  • Severe dry eye treatment
  • Glaucoma, macular degeneration, or cataracts
  • Eye pain or sudden vision loss
Common Questions

Understanding Your Coverage

What insurance is accepted?

We accept VSP, EyeMed, and most major medical insurance plans. We also commonly work with out-of-network benefits for Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, Davis Vision, Spectera, and United Healthcare Vision.

Are you a VSP Premiere Provider?

Yes! As a VSP Premiere Provider, we help you maximize your benefits, offering generous allowances toward our curated collection of designer frames and premium contact lenses.

Do you accept FSA/HSA cards?

Yes, we proudly accept both Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) cards for all qualified medical expenses, including exams and eyewear.

Can I use my FSA/HSA for designer sunglasses?

Absolutely! If the sunglasses have your prescription in them, they are a qualified medical expense. You can use your FSA or HSA cards to purchase prescription sunglasses, daily wear glasses, contact lenses, and to pay for your eye exam.

Do I need to bring my insurance card to my appointment?

While many vision plans (like VSP) can be looked up using the primary member's Social Security Number and Date of Birth, it is always highly recommended to bring your physical Vision and Medical insurance cards, along with your ID, to ensure seamless billing.

How does out-of-network reimbursement work?

Even if we are out-of-network, you can still receive exceptional care and designer eyewear at our boutique! You will simply pay for your services at the time of your visit, and we will provide you with an itemized receipt that you can submit directly to your insurance provider for reimbursement based on your plan's out-of-network benefits.

What is the difference between vision and medical insurance?

Vision insurance covers routine eye care like updating glasses prescriptions. Medical insurance is billed when the doctor is treating a specific medical condition like dry eye, infections, or glaucoma.

Do you accept Kaiser?

This depends heavily on your specific Kaiser plan and whether it includes out-of-network vision benefits. Please call our office so we can verify your exact coverage before your visit.

How do I verify my benefits?
