Thorough & Complete
What's Included in Your Eye Exam
Our comprehensive evaluations go far beneath the surface. By utilizing advanced 3rd generation Optos retinal imaging and OCT cross-section scans, Dr. Rich provides a level of diagnostic detail you won’t find at standard optical chains. We examine every layer of your eye to ensure your vision is protected for years
to come.
Visual Acuity Testing
We measure how clearly you see at various distances using advanced digital acuity testing systems far more accurate than traditional eye charts.
Refraction Assessment
Determining your precise eyeglass or contact lens prescription using both automated refraction and manual techniques for ultimate accuracy.
Eye Health Evaluation
Dr. Rich examines the internal and external structures of your eyes using slit lamp biomicroscopy, dilated fundus examination, and
retinal imaging.
Glaucoma Screening
Intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry) and optic nerve evaluation to detect glaucoma in its earliest stages when treatment is
most effective.
Cataract Detection
Early identification of lens clouding allows for monitoring and timely surgical referral when needed.
Macular Degeneration Screening
Examination of the macula (central vision area) to detect age-related macular degeneration (AMD) early.
Diabetic Retinopathy Evaluation
For diabetic patients, Dr. Rich carefully examines the retina for signs of diabetic eye disease a leading cause of blindness that's preventable with early detection.
Dry Eye Assessment
Evaluation of tear film quality and quantity, with treatment options ranging from prescription drops to
advanced therapies.
State of the Art
Advanced Diagnostic Technology
City Optix invests in state-of-the-art equipment that many San Francisco optometry practices don’t offer:
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
3D cross-sectional imaging of the retina to detect glaucoma and macular disease in their earliest stages.
Digital Retinal Imaging
High-resolution photographs of your retina allow us to detect subtle changes year-over-year and share images with medical specialists
if needed.
Corneal Topography
For contact lens patients, especially those with astigmatism or keratoconus, precise mapping of the corneal surface ensures
optimal fit.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an eye exam take?
Plan for 45-60 minutes for a comprehensive exam. If you’re getting dilated, allow an extra 30 minutes for the drops to take effect.
Will my eyes be dilated?
For most adults, yes dilation allows Dr. Rich to see the full retina. You’ll receive disposable sunglasses and your vision may be blurry for 2-4 hours.
Can I drive after my exam?
If you’re dilated, we recommend having someone drive you or using Uber/Lyft. Your near vision will be blurry temporarily.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
We often have same-day availability. Call (415) 921-1444 to check.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Current eyeglasses and/or contact lenses, insurance cards (vision and medical), list of current medications, and sunglasses (if you’ll be dilated).
